Caroline Charpentier

Principle Investigator

Caroline joined the faculty at the University of Maryland in August 2023 as Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology. She is also affiliated with the Brain and Behavior Institute and Neuroscience and Cognitive Science Program. She completed her postdoctoral training with John O’Doherty at the California Institute of Technology, where she also collaborated with Ralph Adolphs and Dean Mobbs. Her research, focusing on the neuro-computational mechanisms of social learning, has been funded by the Wellcome Trust and the National Institute of Mental Health. Prior to that, Caroline obtained her PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London, where she studied the interaction between emotion and decision-making. Caroline grew up in France, and outside of work, she enjoys traveling and being in nature.

Valentin Guigon

Postdoctoral Researcher

Valentin joined the faculty at the University of Maryland in March 2024 as a Postdoctoral Researcher. He obtained his PhD under the supervision of Jean-Claude Dreher and Prof. Marie Claire Villeval at Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (Lyon, France). His doctoral thesis focused on the neurocognitive mechanisms involved in the transmission of uncertain information among humans. Valentin has adopted a multidisciplinary approach to explore the multifaceted aspects of human decision-making, from its behavior to its biological foundations via its computational processes. He gradually contributed to the research on impulsive actions, reward anticipation and processing, moral decision-making, beliefs about fake news, information-seeking behaviors, beliefs about others' preferences for information and beliefs in large-scale social networks. Beside his scientific interests, Valentin likes to pile arts and activities on the balance. Ask him about photography, climbing and literature.

Sean Maulhardt

Graduate Student

Sean is a Ph.D student who earned his degrees in Psychology, studying for his Bachelor’s at CSU Channel Islands where he began investigation into automaticity versus controlled processing. During his Master’s at NYU, where he collaborated with Catherine Hartley and accomplished a thesis exploring human interactions of temporal credit assignment and declarative memory. During his initial two years at UMD, Sean was privileged to work alongside Alec Solway, engaging in diverse projects related to the successor representation, hierarchical Bayesian modeling, confidence, perceptual decision making, and further exploring temporal credit assignment. He hopes to further his academic journey in statistics and psychology where he aspires to eventually become a lecturer.

Yukta Thyagaraj

Graduate Student

Yukta is a Ph.D. student in the Neuroscience and Cognitive Sciences (NACS) program at UMD. She completed her B.S.-M.S. in Biology at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, where she also worked with Dr. Srikanth Padmala on affective processing. At the SLD Lab, she plans to use a computational psychiatry approach towards understanding the cognitive processes that underlie social and affective disorders. In her free time, she likes to sketch, dance, shop and eat good food!

Chaebin Yoo

Graduate Student

Chaebin is a Ph.D student in the NACS program at UMD. She completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in psychology at Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul, where she worked with Dr. Justin Minue Kim to investigate the neural underpinnings of anxiety. With a background in affective neuroscience, she now aims to explore the neurocognitive mechanisms of affective disorders adopting the computational psychiatry approach, also taking a developmental viewpoint. Outside the lab, Chaebin is passionate about photography, theatre, and finding good dessert.
